Botanical survey in Bracknell Forest

Acid grassland/heath Bracknell.

In August 2012 Bracknell Forest Council commissioned us to undertake a botanical survey of the acid grassland/heath areas of a former landfill site on the eastern edge of Bracknell. The survey was a requirement of the management plan for the site.

Although no BAP habitats were identified, the survey recorded a number of species and habitat components typically associated with acidic heath. This suggests that there is potential for this habitat to establish and develop. Knowing the current state of a habitat will help inform future management decisions to promote the development of high priority habitats within the county.

As well as informing management decisions, detailed botanical habitat surveys can be used for many different situations, for example, monitoring habitat change, assessing the distribution and populations of particular species, identifying habitats that are associated with different species groups so helping to target further fauna surveys.
