TVERC training

TVERC provides training for habitat and species surveys, biological recording and identification and in the use of GIS. 

As well as an annual training programme of courses we can also offer bespoke training

TVERC Training Course Programme

TVERC training courses help train volunteers to improve their identification and recording skills. These introductory training courses are run by expert ecologists and aimed at beginners. The courses generally involve both indoor and outdoor sessions.

Course fees: individual £60 / professional £120 / student £30*

*There are limited student places on each course, given on a first come first served basis. Proof of student status will be required at time of booking.

Tea and coffee are provided on all the courses but you will need to bring your own lunch. 

2018 training programme:

  • Introduction to Bird Survey Techniques
    Sat 21st April 9am-3pm at BBOWT Chimney Meadows, Bampton, OX18 2EH

    The course will provide an overview of some of the approaches taken whilst monitoring birds. It is intended for people with some identification skills who have limited experience of surveys and want to widen their knowledge. You will learn about Breeding Bird Surveys and territory mapping as well as looking at a variety of other approaches.

    For the outdoor sessions we will aim to practise some of the techniques that have been covered. This short course will provide brief information covering a variety of survey techniques. It will not go into detail about bird identification or legislation.

    Bring suitable outdoor clothing and footwear, binoculars (if you have them), notepad and pencil.
     

  • Introduction to GIS (Geographic Information Systems)
    Sat 9th June, Nature Discovery Centre, Thatcham, RG19 3FU

    Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are systems for storing, managing and analysing spatial data. This course is designed to introduce you to GIS and spatial data and enable you to display, manipulate and interrogate spatial data. You will learn about different types of spatial data, how to create simple maps, how to create and edit spatial data and how to carry out some simple analytical tasks.

    This course is ideal for students and biological recorders looking for a basic introduction to GIS. This course will use the free open source QGIS system. A full set of course notes and course data will be provided.

    Participants will need to bring their own laptop with a copy of QGIS (which is freely available) already installed on it. If you do not have a laptop, please contact us in advance as we have a very limited supply of laptops for this course.
     

  • Otter Ecology and Surveying
    Sat 15th September 10am-4pm at RSPB Otmoor, meeting at RSPB Office, Folly Farm, Common Road, Beckley, OX3 9UR

    An introduction to the ecology of otters, covering their distribution, diet and behaviour. You will learn about key field signs to look out for and the methods used to survey for otters. The morning session will be at the RSPB office in Beckley, followed by an afternoon walking around Otmoor nature reserve looking for signs of otters.

    Bring suitable outdoor clothing and footwear.

Please note that refunds will not be made on cancellations made less than one month before the course. Courses may be cancelled if insufficient numbers book onto the course. We will contact you as soon as possible to let you know if we need to cancel and arrange course fees to be reimbursed.

TVERC Bespoke Training Provision on Request

TVERC can also offer bespoke training on a wide variety of topics and methodologies for organisations, planned and developed in discussion with your organisation to suit your specific requirements and timings. This may be a one-off workshop for your team or group, but could also include supporting and developing wider projects to train people in biological recording and surveying skills.
