Our next course in this year's TVERC training programme is:

Bumblebee Identification and Field Techniques with Ivan Wright. 30 April 2017, 10am - 4pm.

** Last few places - including student discount rate availability. Book now! **

A welcome into the wonderful world of bumblebees! There are approximately 24 species of bumbleebee in the UK and they are fascinating creatures, but under-recorded. This training day will mostly deal with the accurate identification of bumblebees for recording purposes. It will also be covering what is - and is not - possible in the field with a pragmatic understanding of recording some difficult species e.g. transect work. The workshop will also include hands-on survey and specimen preparation experience - including a chance to practice field and bench techniques.

Ivan Wright is an expert, experienced and genial tutor. He is County Bee Recorder for Oxfordshire and Chairman of Shotover Wildilfe, with Shotover being a 'hot spot' for bee records.

The training will be mainly class room based but with a short walk nearby, if the weather is reasonable. So please wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear.

Books and equipment will be provided. But if you have your own hand lens, collecting net and identification books please do bring them.

Tea and coffee will be provided, but please bring your own lunch.

Use our online booking form or contact tverc@oxfordshire.gov.uk for more details and for alternative booking options.

Venue: Horspath Community Hub, The Old Chapel, The Green, Horspath, Oxon OX33 1RP. There is no parking at The Hub itself (accept for disability access) but plenty of parking at the nearby Village Hall. The Village Hall is the first building on the left as you enter Horspath from Oxford. Then walk 100m towards the village along the pavement to the Hub (or safer than the horrid narrow pavement - anti-clockwise round the cricket boundary to the Hub’s own little foot-bridge).

Our TVERC 2017 training course series:

TVERC runs training courses to help volunteers to improve their identification skills and knowledge of a range of priority habitats and species.

These introductory training courses are run by expert ecologists and aimed at beginners. If you would like to volunteer to help survey habitats or species in Oxfordshire or Berkshire but feel you lack all the relevant skills then our TVERC training courses might really interest you.  Our wide variety of  training sessions cover basic ecology, relevant legislation, identification features and survey techniques. They generally involve both indoor and outdoor sessions.
