Volunteer for TVERC

We occasionally have opportunities for volunteers to help us to collect and manage environmental data, either in the field or desk based. Volunteering can be greatly satisfying and enjoyable. Unravelling a particularly knotty problem with a dataset, seeing a species you haven’t seen for some time or meeting up with like-minded people are great ways to feel that your time has been well spent. If you are looking for new experience, working alongside TVERC staff and learning skills may help you to meet personal goals and discover hidden talents. From planning to conservation, the data we provide with your help influences decision-making.

Species data volunteering usually involves:

• data validation to make sure records contain accurate information
• digital mapping, using GIS
• preparation of datasets for import into our Recorder 6 database
• sourcing ecological reports from local authority planning portals

Field volunteering usually involves:

• carrying out standard habitat and botanical surveys
• undertaking surveys for specific species or taxonomic groups

You will have the opportunity to:

• learn more about how biodiversity and geodiversity data are collected, managed and used
• develop skills in using software such as Excel and GIS
• increase knowledge of local biodiversity
• visit sites which may not be accessible to the general public
• gain experience of recording and enhance your field skills
• work alongside enthusiastic and professional ecologists
• contribute to a valuable resource for conservation
