Why do Local Authorities need TVERC?

About TVERC

Thames Valley Environmental Records Centre collects, manages and shares information on species, habitats and important wildlife and geological sites in Berkshire and Oxfordshire. We are a `not-for-profit’ organisation run by a partnership of all the local authorities in Oxfordshire and Berkshire plus the Environment Agency.

TVERC information is used:

  • By planning authorities and developers to make sound decisions on the design and location of sustainable development.
  • To help farmers, landowners and conservation bodies decide how to manage land in the best way to enhance biodiversity.
  • By Berkshire and Oxfordshire nature partnerships to direct wildlife conservation work to where it will be most effective.
  • For education and research by students, teachers and scientists.

We collect data from professional and volunteer surveyors, which are carefully checked so that we can provide high quality information in a format which suits local authorities.

Making decisions without TVERC information could result in your Authority:

  • Failing to meet statutory responsibilities
  • Breaching wildlife legislation
  • Planning permissions overturned
  • Local Development Framework / Local Plan judged unsound by the Planning Inspectorate
  • Costs awarded against the Council
  • Officer time wasted fighting judicial reviews
  • Delays to the LDF / Local Plan
  • Negative publicity & loss of reputation

Your Authority needs TVERC information to comply with legislation & policy:

  • National Planning Policy Framework
  • Local Plans, Policies and Strategies
  • The Town & Country Planning (Environmental Impact Assessment) Rgns 2011
  • Conservation of Habitats & Species Rgns 2010
