Help us fill the gaps in our wildlife records

How well do we really know the wildlife of Berkshire and Oxfordshire?

TVERC’s database contains more than 5 million species records, helping to inform conservation, planning and our understanding of how local nature is changing.

Despite the efforts of the wildlife recording community, some areas still have few or no records, while others are well recorded. We are grateful for all the work already done, but we need your help to record wildlife in under-recorded areas. The information we hold depends on where people choose to record.

That’s why we’ve launched Help Us Fill the Species Gaps. Our interactive map highlights under-recorded 1 km squares across Berkshire and Oxfordshire, helping wildlife recorders, community groups and anyone interested in nature find places where their observations could make a real difference.

You don’t need to be an expert, and you don’t need to find anything rare.A singing Robin, a Common Darter, a patch of bramble or even a Dandelion could provide valuable information. Every observation helps build a more complete picture of the species living in our area.

Some under-recorded squares may be close to home, while others are tucked away in places that wildlife recorders rarely visit or have access to. Wherever you choose to explore, your records will help improve species distribution maps and support future conservation work.

Remember to stay safe, respect private land and stick to public rights of way unless you have permission to enter.
