City Nature Challenge in Oxfordshire and Berkshire!

City Nature Challenge in Oxfordshire and Berkshire!

Help us to document the wildlife of Berkshire and Oxfordshire this April!

For the past eight years, regions across the world have been doing synchronised counts to record as much wildlife as possible over 4 days. Now it's your chance to get involved! Record any wildlife you see between Friday 26th April and Monday 29th April 2024 anywhere in Oxfordshire and Berkshire, and we'll be added to a global leaderboard. How will we do?

How do I take part?

Taking part is easy: any time you spot any wildlife - from birds to bees, flowers to fungi and everything in between - add the information to iNaturalist via the app or website. Add a photo of the organism and you'll get suggestions for ID from the app and recording community. What is City Nature Challenge?

The City Nature Challenge is organized on a global scale by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the California Academy of Sciences. The City Nature Challenge 2024 for Oxfordshire and Berkshire is being organised by Thames Valley Environmental Records Centre (TVERC).

About TVERC: We are the hub for environmental records in Oxfordshire. We collect information on species and habitats and provide this to local decision-makers for use in planning, conservation and research. To do this we rely on volunteers like you collecting records of what you've seen and where. If we know where species are, where they have been lost, and where they might be at risk, we can better protect them from future threats. We can also see where conservation measures have been successful and where species have done particularly well. To find out more about biological recording and TVERC, visit https://www.tverc.org/cms/content/share-your-records

Want to organise a City Nature Challenge event?

If you are an organisation, group or enthusiastic individual and you'd like to organise your own City Nature Challenge wildlife recording event between April 26th-29th, that would be amazing!

This could be as simple as planning to spend some time as a group, walking a route around your local green space and taking photos of any wildlife you see! If you already have an event planned for that weekend you could consider adding a quick City Nature Challenge recording session as part of it.

If you are planning an event, or have any questions, please let us know by emailing tverc@oxfordshire.gov.uk as we would love to hear about it!
